Auto Glossary

Bodily Injury Limit: This is the maximum amount your insurance policy will pay when an insured person becomes legally liable for bodily injury or death caused by the insured person in an auto accident.

Collision: Collision coverage pays for damage to a covered vehicle (up to the actual cash value) when it overturns or strikes another vehicle or object (e.g. a fence). Note: If you select collision, you must also select comprehensive coverage.  Three types of Collision coverage are available.  Collision deductible options and premiums are shown on the rate pages.  Any collision coverage will not be written without Other Than Collision coverage.

Regular or Standard Collision: The Company will pay for collision damages to the insured vehicle, regardless of responsibility for the accident.  The insured must pay the indicated deductible for each accident.

Broad Form Collision: The Company will pay for collision damages to the insured vehicle regardless of responsibility for the accident.  If the driver of the insured vehicle was more than 50% the cause of the accident, the insured must pay the indicated deductible amount for each accident.

Limited Collision: The Company will pay for collision damages when the driver of the insured vehicle is not more than 50% the cause of the accident.

Comprehensive Coverage: This coverage pays for damage to a covered vehicle (up to the actual cash value) caused by covered events other than a collision. Examples of covered events include:

Deductible: The amount of a claim you agree to pay per incident. This amount is deducted from the total payment by your insurance company. In general, choosing a higher deductible will lower your rate.

Example:
Your covered vehicle hits a fence causing $1,600 of damage to your vehicle and you have chosen a $250 deductible. You will pay $250 directly to the body shop and your insurance company will pay the balance of $1350.

Property Damage Limit: This is the maximum amount your insurance policy will pay when an insured person becomes legally liable for damage the insured person causes in an auto accident to the property of other people (e.g. light poles, fences, another vehicle, etc.).

Rental Reimbursement Coverage: This coverage pays for rental expenses, up to the selected limits, for a substitute vehicle in the event of a loss covered by your collision or comprehensive coverage. (Note: You must also select comprehensive and collision to obtain this coverage).

Example:
Limits represent actual dollars and are expressed in a format such as 30/900, meaning $30 per day, $900 per incident.

Towing or Emergency Trouble Service: This coverage pays up to the selected limit (i.e.$50, $75, $100) for towing, minor repairs like taping a radiator hose and filling radiator with water, or unlocking your covered vehicle, when it is disabled, whether or not there is an accident involved. Also, you must also select comprehensive coverage to obtain this coverage).

Underinsured Motorist Coverage Limit: This is the maximum amount your insurance policy will pay in excess of the amount of Liability Bodily Injury insurance carried by an at fault motorist for bodily injury or death to you, covered family members, and/or the occupants of your insured vehicle caused by the at-fault motorist, who is legally liable but does not have enough insurance.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage Limit: This is the maximum amount your insurance policy will pay for bodily injury or death to you, covered family members, and/or the occupants of your insured vehicle caused by a motorist who is legally liable but does not have insurance.

Violation/Ticket: Any breach of motor vehicle laws (e.g. speeding, running a red light, driving while intoxicated, expired license plates, etc.)
